What is Ultrasonography /Sonography/Ultrasound Scan?

Ultrasound is one of the most important inventions in imaging that has made the life of the patient as well as the treating doctor so much simpler. USG uses ultrasound waves which are very high frequency (1-15 MHz) sound waves that the human ear cannot hear.

These waves produced by the USG probe c are kept on the patient's body. The ultrasound waves travel inside the patient's body & are reflected on various tissues & surfaces. These reflected echoes are captured by the same probe & presented to the software in the machine which gives the image a form decided according to the strength of the echo. The technology now has become so advanced that the image is crystal clear as if seeing the organs or the fetus.

There are Several Advantages of USG:
1) It does not have any ionizing radiation so is safe even in fetuses & children.
2) It is easily available & fairly inexpensive.
3) It is non-invasive & painless.
4) The multiplanar imaging is very accurate & gives valuable information for diagnosis.
5) The technology has improved so much that USG has replaced MRI in many instances.
